Functional Foods

Functional foods can be either natural, whole foods, or foods that are fortified or enriched with extra nutrients. Functional food provides the body with more health benefits beyond the traditional nutrients (vitamins and minerals) it contains, when they are consumed at sufficient quantity on a regular basis. Functional foods can be from either plant or animal origin, and can include readily packaged foods, beverages and fresh foods.

Benefits of functional foods range from reducing the risk of heart diseases, certain cancers, lowering blood cholesterol levels, promoting our immune function, prevent the onset of or reducing the severity ofdiarrhea, improving our digestion to assist in post-workout recovery. Certain functional foods have also been used for their antiseptic and antibacterial properties.
